Therapeutic Farming
What is Therapeutic Farming?
Therapeutic Farming (often called Social Farming) uses the daily rhythms of a working farm to help people build confidence, independence, and wellbeing. It moves beyond animal interaction into active participation, where individuals take on meaningful roles in the care of the land and its livestock.
- Community Contribution: Working as part of a farm team fosters social inclusion and reminds every participant that their contribution is vital to the life of the farm.
- Meaningful Purpose: Participants engage in real farm tasks—from planting seasonal plants to maintaining habitats—providing a powerful sense of accomplishment.
- Skill Development: Through hands-on labour, individuals develop practical vocational skills, improved fine motor coordination, and better problem-solving abilities.
- Routine & Stability: The predictable nature of the farm seasons provides a grounding structure, helping to reduce anxiety and build a healthy daily routine.

What are the Benefits of Therapeutic Farming?
Therapeutic farming is about more than just tasks; it is a pathway to personal empowerment. By engaging with the land and animals in a meaningful way, our participants experience:
- Increased Confidence: Mastering new skills—from animal handling to yard management—builds a “can-do” attitude that carries over into every other part of life.
- A True Sense of Purpose: Being responsible for the health of a living animal or the success of a project provides a powerful reason to get out of bed and contribute to something bigger than oneself.
- Improved Mental Wellbeing: The combination of fresh air, physical activity, and the rhythmic nature of farm work is a natural remedy for stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Social Integration: Working alongside a team in a low-pressure environment helps break down social barriers, building genuine friendships and a sense of belonging.
- Emotional Regulation: The farm is a living classroom for patience and resilience. Learning to stay calm and steady around animals helps participants better manage their own emotions.
Who Would Benefit From Therapeutic Farming?
Our therapeutic farming programs are designed for individuals who are looking for more than just a visit—they are for those who want to be an active part of our team. We provide a supportive, adapted environment for:
- Adults & Children with Additional Needs: We provide tailored support for those with additional needs, ensuring that farm tasks are inclusive, safe, and empowering for all abilities.
- Individuals Facing Mental Health Challenges: For those navigating depression, anxiety, or PTSD, the farm offers a grounding routine and a “nature-first” approach to recovery and wellness.
- Neurodivergent Individuals: Our farm is a “safe-space” for those with Autism or ADHD. We celebrate different ways of thinking and provide a sensory-rich environment that rewards focus and hands-on engagement.
- Students with SEN & SEMH Needs: We work to provide for Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) students, offering an alternative learning environment where practical success builds classroom confidence.
